The ‘What’ and ‘Why’ of Creating a Family Memory Book

0

Your life consists of memories. And your family’s lives are a carefully woven tapestry of colorful memories, stories, and accomplishments. The only problem? Sometimes it’s difficult to recall the rich details of those stories as life moves faster.

While there are plenty of ways to preserve memories through photos, videos, and storytelling, there’s one unique way to organize your family’s history into a central place that eventually becomes a family heirloom. We’re talking about a family memory book.

What is a Family Memory Book?

A family memory book, which some would call a family history book, is a carefully curated collection of memories that captures the essence of who your family is. It’s more than just a photo album or a cheesy scrapbook. It’s a time capsule full of personal stories, details, photographs, and memories. It’s a tangible narrative that you can revisit at any time. A family memory book is also a resource that future generations can reference to better understand who they are and where they’ve come from.

Common elements in a family memory book include photographs, letters, cards, mementos (such as pressed flowers, newspaper clippings, or ticket stubs), and firsthand narratives. Regardless of what it looks like or contains, a book like this has deep significance.

Family memory books can take many forms depending on the family’s preferences and the purpose of the book. It could be a chronological record, tracing the family’s history across generations. Alternatively, it could be a thematic book that highlights certain events or periods (like a book of family weddings or a book about a beloved family vacation spot). There’s no right or wrong way to do it – it’s completely up to you!

The Benefits of a Family Memory Book

Having a family memory book is about more than just having a place to put all of those family photos that have been taken over the years. There are some tangible advantages, including:

  • Fosters a stronger family connection. There’s something empowering about working together to create a book around something you all share. The art of creating the memory book is often more powerful than the end product.
  • Preserves history. A memory book can serve as a tangible link to the past, connecting current and future generations to their roots. It provides a way for children and grandchildren to learn about their ancestors, understand where they came from, and appreciate the trials and triumphs that shaped the family. In this way, it helps to keep the family history alive, ensuring that it’s not forgotten as time passes.
  • Offers healing during grief. Every person processes grief differently after losing a loved one. For some, there’s immediate pain followed by healthy recovery. For others, that pain gets buried in the busyness of the season and pops up later on. Some people are open, while others keep their feelings close to their chest. But whatever the case may be, putting together a family memory book can provide a healing activity during times of grief or transition.
  • Makes for a unique gift. A family memory book can be a unique and personal gift, whether for a birthday, a holiday, an anniversary, or a family reunion. It’s a gift that reflects a deep level of thought and care and is likely to be treasured by the recipient for years to come. It can be particularly meaningful for family members who live far away, offering them a tangible connection to their family roots.

How to Create a Family Memory Book

Creating a family memory book begins with gathering, organizing, and writing/designing:

1. Gather

Begin by collecting all potential materials for the memory book. Collect old photographs, letters, cards, and various keepsakes that hold a special place in your family’s history. Gather any existing written records such as letters, diaries, newspaper clippings, or family recipes. Interview family members to capture their stories and memories. (This can be a great way to involve everyone and to gather first-hand narratives about your family’s history.)

2. Organize

Once you have everything you need, organize the materials. Depending on the type of book you’re creating, you might organize information chronologically, thematically, or any other way you choose.

3. Write/Design

An online printing company can make the process of creating a family memory book significantly easier and more professional-looking. Once you reach the design stage, find a print company and figure out what their design and formatting requirements are. Then, design your book based on these specs. Spiral bound book printing is one of the best options, as it’s inexpensive and makes it easy to read and store the book for years to come.

What Are You Waiting For?

There are few things more powerful for a family to work on together than a memory book. While it can take time to develop, remember that the process of gathering, organizing, writing, and designing is where the power lies. Enjoy the process!

Demystifying the Employee Retention Credit:  A Lifeline for Businesses Amid Pandemic Turmoil

0

In response to the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. government introduced the Employee Retention Credit (ERC), a refundable federal tax credit.  Unlike a loan, this credit does not require repayment and is aimed at encouraging businesses to sustain their workforce.  Available for the tax years 2020 and 2021, the ERC offered varying credit percentages with a maximum of $5,000 per employee in 2020 and up to $28,000 per employee in 2021 for eligible businesses.

The ERC played a vital role in assisting businesses in navigating the economic fallout from the pandemic.  It provided the much-needed monetary cushion to offset revenue loss and keep businesses afloat.  The 2021 ERC saw a special provision for new entities known as Recovery Startup Businesses, further expanding the program’s reach.

Qualifying for the ERC was not limited to businesses experiencing reduced gross receipts.  The scope was broad, encapsulating U.S. organizations from diverse industries, irrespective of size, and those impacted by government-imposed restrictions.  Specific qualifying criteria were also established to ascertain the magnitude and period of such impacts.

With an array of qualifying factors like wages, which include cash payments and employer-provided healthcare costs, and the number of full-time employees in 2019, the ERC was flexible yet robust.  Interestingly, businesses that availed the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans were not excluded from this relief measure. In 2023, businesses can claim the Employee Retention Credit by amending their tax filings, a process that typically takes the IRS 4-10 months to process.  To ensure correct and efficient filing, businesses can turn to expert groups like Credit League, equipped with a proficient team of attorneys and CPAs, dedicated to assisting businesses in maximizing their ERC benefits.

Improving Transfer Success: A Path to Educational Attainment

Transfer success is essential to Kentucky’s educational attainment goal of 60% of the population with a postsecondary credential or degree by 2030.

A transfer has multiple benefits as it helps students save and later earn more money, but too few transfer-aspiring students reach their goal of a bachelor’s degree. In 2021, nearly 30,000 students were on a transfer pathway, and 77% (23,100) of those students will not transfer by 2026-27. Meanwhile, 23% of the 30,000 students will transfer to the university.

Students face many obstacles when transferring. Nationally, transfers declined 8% from 2020-21, but in Kentucky, transfers rose by 2%. That said, transfer success is an equity issue with white students twice as likely to transfer as Black and Hispanic students. Similarly, students from families with higher incomes are twice as likely to transfer as students from families with lower incomes.

Connecting the path from our community colleges to universities is vital to transfer success. Kentucky’s visions for transfer include centering students’ needs above all, prioritizing efforts to strengthen institutional collaboration, and removing obstacles to seamless transfers while maximizing the applicability of credits toward programs of study.

Pros and Cons of Working with a Personal Injury Lawyer

0

Working with a personal injury lawyer can have both advantages and disadvantages. Here are some pros and cons to consider when deciding whether to hire a personal injury lawyer:

Pros

Legal Expertise: Personal injury lawyers specialize in this area of law and have a deep understanding of the legal processes and regulations related to personal injury cases. They can provide valuable guidance and support throughout your claim.

Case Evaluation: A personal injury lawyer can assess the strength of your case and determine the potential for a successful claim. They can advise you on whether pursuing legal action is worth your time and effort.

Negotiation Skills: Lawyers are skilled negotiators who can advocate on your behalf during settlement negotiations with insurance companies or the at-fault party. They work to secure fair compensation for your injuries and damages.

Investigation and Evidence Gathering: A personal injury lawyer will conduct a thorough investigation of your accident, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and obtaining expert opinions if necessary. This helps build a strong case in your favor.

Handling Legal Procedures: Personal injury claims involve complex legal procedures and paperwork. Having a lawyer on your side can relieve you of the burden of dealing with legal matters, allowing you to focus on recovery.

Contingency Fee Arrangement: Many personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. This can be advantageous as it eliminates upfront costs and ensures the lawyer is motivated to achieve a positive outcome.

Cons

Legal Fees: If your lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, they will take a percentage of your settlement as their fee. While this arrangement can be beneficial if you win, it’s essential to understand the fee structure before proceeding.

Time Investment: Personal injury cases can be lengthy, involving negotiations, investigations, and potential court proceedings. It requires patience and time to see the case through to its resolution.

Settlement Delays: While a lawyer aims to secure the best settlement for you, negotiations can sometimes result in delays. If you need compensation quickly, the negotiation process may not meet your timeline.

No Guaranteed Outcome: Hiring a personal injury lawyer does not guarantee a favorable outcome in your case. Even with legal representation, the outcome depends on the specific circumstances and evidence available.

Limited Compensation: In some cases, the compensation awarded may not cover all your losses and damages fully. A lawyer can help maximize your compensation, but it’s essential to manage expectations realistically.

Conflicts of Interest: There may be situations where a personal injury lawyer has a conflict of interest or cannot take your case due to existing commitments. Finding the right lawyer who can dedicate sufficient time to your case is crucial.

Ultimately, the decision to work with a personal injury lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the severity of your injuries, and your comfort level with handling legal matters. Consulting with a lawyer during an initial free consultation can help you understand your options and make an informed decision about your claim.

How Does Divorce Work in California

0

In California, the divorce process begins when one spouse files a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. The Petition must include information about both spouses, any children involved, assets and debts that need to be divided, and the grounds on which the divorce is being sought (e.g., irreconcilable differences). The other spouse then has 30 days to file a Response to the Petition, which can include a Counter-Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.

Going to Trial

The parties then enter into negotiations to resolve any disputes about child custody and visitation, spousal support and property division. If they are unable to reach an agreement, then the case will go to trial. At the trial, a judge will hear both sides’ arguments and make a decision about the issues in dispute. After the trial, both parties have 30 days to file any appeals.

Once all of the issues are resolved and any appeals filed, then the court will enter a judgment that finalizes the divorce. The judgment is based on California’s Community Property laws and outlines how assets and debts should be divided between the spouses. It may also include provisions for child custody, support and visitation. Once the judgment is entered into the court record, it becomes legally binding and enforceable.

Spousal Support & Alimony

Alimony or spousal support can be an important part of a divorce proceeding in California. The court will consider factors such as the length of the marriage, the earning potential of each spouse, and each party’s contribution to the marriage when determining an appropriate amount of alimony. The court may also consider other factors such as any health issues that prevent a party from working or the need for one spouse to stay at home to care for children.

In most cases, spousal support is intended to provide financial assistance to the lower-earning spouse while they become financially independent. Generally, alimony will end when either party remarries or dies, but this may depend on the terms of the court’s judgment.

Estate Planning After a Divorce

After your divorce is finalized, it’s important to update any estate planning documents such as wills and trusts. This can help ensure that your estate is distributed according to your wishes in the event of your death. It’s also important to update any beneficiary designations on bank accounts, retirement plans and life insurance policies. Finally, you should review any prenuptial agreements or other legal contracts signed during the marriage – they may need to be modified following a divorce.

Finding the Right Attorney

The divorce process can be complex and emotionally draining. To ensure your rights are protected, it’s important to hire an attorney who understands California’s divorce laws and has experience handling cases like yours. An experienced family law attorney can provide advice on how to best approach the issues in your case, negotiate a settlement that meets your needs, or represent you at trial if necessary. Working with a skilled attorney can help make the divorce process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Navigating the divorce process in California can be challenging. Hiring an experienced family law attorney is the best way to ensure that your rights are protected and that you get a fair outcome from your case. With the right legal representation, you can move on with your life and build a new future.

How are New Cyber Threats Changing the Way Cybersecurity Processes Function?

0

A key factor in the changing landscape of cybersecurity processes is the speed with which new cyber threats are evolving. Previously, companies would have to wait for weeks or even months before being able to detect and respond to a cyber attack. Nowadays, however, hackers can launch sophisticated attacks almost instantaneously, making it harder for organizations to keep up with the latest security measures and protocols.

Additionally, the rise of automation has amplified the potential for cyber threats. With automated tools and algorithms being used to detect vulnerabilities in systems, organizations are now more vulnerable than ever before. This has further highlighted the need for a proactive approach when it comes to cybersecurity, as well as better education amongst employees on how to identify and respond to possible attacks.

How to set up Cybersecurity Processes in a Changing Landscape

As new cyber threats become more advanced and widespread, the need to protect our networks from malicious actors is becoming increasingly essential. It’s not enough to simply have basic antivirus protection; organizations must also consider setting up cybersecurity processes that are tailored to their specific needs.

So how can companies best set up their cybersecurity measures in today’s ever-changing landscape?

Develop a Cybersecurity Policy

First and foremost, companies must develop a comprehensive cybersecurity policy. This document should include detailed instructions on how to protect data, networked systems, and other assets from malicious actors. The policy should also cover the procedures for responding quickly when an attack does occur. All employees should be aware of this policy and its contents to ensure that they are taking the necessary steps to protect the organization from cyber threats.

Establish Clear and Comprehensive Checklists

Checklists are a great way to ensure that all security measures are implemented correctly and consistently. Companies should develop checklists for everything from setting up user accounts to patching systems, so that nothing gets overlooked. Additionally, having checklists in place will make it easier for new employees to understand the organization’s security processes and procedures.

Conduct Regular Training Sessions

In order to keep up with the latest threats, it’s essential that all employees receive regular training sessions on cybersecurity best practices. Companies should include topics like password security, social engineering schemes, phishing attacks, and other related subjects in their trainings. This will help ensure that employees are well-equipped to identify and defend against potential cyber threats.

Perform Regular Vulnerability Assessments

Vulnerability assessments should be conducted regularly in order to identify any weaknesses in the organization’s systems or networks. Companies can use a variety of tools to scan their systems for vulnerabilities, such as open source security scanners or commercial products. Once these weaknesses are identified, they should be addressed and corrected immediately to prevent potential attacks from occurring.

Monitor Security Alerts and Reports

It’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest security alerts and reports, so that organizations can quickly respond to new threats. Companies should make sure they have monitoring systems in place that will alert them of any suspicious activity or potential breaches. Additionally, they should also subscribe to industry newsletters or blogs that provide news and advice about cybersecurity trends. This will help ensure that organizations are always aware of the latest threats and can take the necessary steps to safeguard their networks.

Keep Your Network Safe

These are just a few of the steps companies can take to set up their cybersecurity processes in today’s ever-changing landscape. By taking the necessary precautions, organizations can minimize their risks and ensure that their networks remain safe from malicious actors.

Understanding Your Organization’s Digital Risk Profile Through Cybersecurity Assessments

0

A cybersecurity assessment is an audit of your organization’s IT systems and networks to identify potential threats, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities. It reviews existing policies, procedures, and processes related to system security. The goal of a cybersecurity assessment is to provide organizations with insight into their digital risk profile, as well as recommend steps they can take to improve their overall security posture.

The most effective cybersecurity assessments use a combination of manual and automated tools to collect data from the organization’s various systems and networks. This data is then analyzed to identify areas of potential risk, as well as determine if there are any gaps in existing policies or processes that need to be addressed.

Understanding Your Digital Risk Profile

The results of a cybersecurity assessment provide organizations with valuable insight into their digital risk profile. This includes understanding potential threats, recognizing areas of weakness, and uncovering any existing vulnerabilities.

Understanding your organization’s digital risk profile is critical for developing an effective security strategy. It allows you to identify which areas are most vulnerable to attacks and prioritize actions to protect those areas. Additionally, by assessing your digital risk profile, you can take proactive steps to reduce potential threats and improve overall security posture.

Taking Action on Your Findings

Once an organization has identified areas of weakness within their IT systems and networks, they need to take action to mitigate any risks associated with those weaknesses. This could involve implementing new policies or procedures, deploying additional security measures, or conducting regular vulnerability scans.

To do this, create a risk management plan that identifies the actions necessary to mitigate any identified risks. This might include implementing additional cyber security procedures and policies, purchasing new equipment or software, increasing employee training on cyber security best practices, and conducting regular system scans and audits.

Monitor and Adjust

Finally, it is important to regularly monitor your organization’s digital risk profile and make adjustments as needed. This can be done by periodically rerunning the same assessment and comparing results to previous findings. In this way, you can identify if any new threats or weaknesses have been introduced over time, and take action to address them. It is also a good idea to periodically review and update organizational policies and procedures to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest industry best practices.

Managed IT Services

If your organization does not have the resources or technical expertise necessary to conduct a cybersecurity assessment on its own, you may want to consider engaging a managed IT services provider. Managed IT services providers can help organizations identify potential threats and weaknesses, as well as recommend solutions for improving their overall security posture. Additionally, these providers often offer ongoing monitoring and support services to ensure that organizations remain up-to-date with the latest security best practices. This can help organizations feel confident that their systems and networks are protected from potential threats, and ultimately reduce their overall risk profile.

Protect Your Systems and Networks

By understanding your organization’s digital risk profile, you can ensure that the right steps are taken to reduce potential threats and protect your IT systems and networks. This will not only help improve security posture but also give you peace of mind knowing that you’re doing everything possible to keep your data and systems secure. It is important to remember that cyber security is an ongoing process, and regular assessments should be done to ensure your organization’s digital risk profile remains up-to-date and well protected.

BDSM Curious? Sex Coach Kim Anami Calls Power Play ‘An Excellent Tool’ in the Bedroom

0

For those who experience the world only on a scale of vanilla to vanilla, the bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism scene can seem over the top. But, as sex aficionado and teacher Kim Anami can tell you, broadening your erotic palate to embrace the full-bodied, nuanced flavors of BDSM will not only add spice to your love life, it can expand the limits of your libido event horizon, deepen trust in your intimate relationships, broaden your sexual self-awareness, help you better understand what makes your sex partners tick, and open yourself up for some of the most mind-blowing sex you’ve ever had.

For the uninitiated, according to WebMD, BDSM is “a term used to describe aspects of sex that involve dominance, submission, and control. The practice typically involves one partner taking on a more dominant role during sex, while the other is more submissive.

(Of course, you don’t have to be a cisgender woman or cisgender man to experiment with BDSM. Any consensual willing partners who want to take things to the next level, can learn more about the discipline and explore the process to see how it can improve their dynamic.)

“While these are the broader categories, there is no one way to practice BDSM — different types can include power play, role-playing, pain play, bondage, wax play, edging, sensory deprivation, or humiliation.”

Kim Anami on Embracing Classic Male/Female Archetypes via BDSM

“I think that when done consciously, BDSM is an excellent tool for couples to use in their intimate explorations,” says Kim Anami.

“At its essence and its heart, BDSM is an exploration of dominant and submissive energies. And those are very erotic, very charged, and very archetypal,” Anami explains. “If we look at the feminine and masculine archetypes, archetypal feminine energy is about surrender, opening, flow, letting go. Archetypal masculine is about taking charge, being assertive, getting things done in the world — and we have both those energies within us, but in BDSM, we get to play with those.” (In Asian culture, this sexual power dynamic is represented by yin and yang.)

Anami defines archetypal feminine energy — or the goddess archetype — as “softer, open, receptive,” embodying the spiritual notion of surrender, whereas in the masculine archetype — aka the warrior — “energy is more active, achievement-oriented, driven, takes charge, makes things happen.” While we all have these energies at play, Anami says that for the most part, “women inhabit feminine energy and men, masculine energy.

“The beauty of conscious BDSM play is that we get to reimmerse ourselves in those energies and those dynamics, and that makes for the hottest sexual attraction we have. I mean, in the concept of sexual polarity, which is masculine and feminine energy or a positive and a negative charge attract each other. Two positive charges repel and two negative charges repel, and so, when you have these very gender-neutralized couples, they’re not having [good] sex.”

Kim Anami maintains the societal movement away from traditional gender archetypes, rather than expanding sexual perceptions, has actually resulted in a negative trend with regard to sexual pleasure and fulfillment between men and women. “Really, I think in the modern day, men and women have been neutralized, and so men have been discouraged from really inhabiting their masculine energy and told that they’re really toxic and dangerous and bad,” she says. “And women have been discouraged from really inhabiting their feminine energy, as though it’s kind of useless in the world.”

According to Anami, denying or burying a deep understanding of this particular dynamic is limiting to both understanding and pleasure. Kim Anami holds that superior sex happens only when the most electric polarized, extreme feminine and extreme masculine energies are present. “That’s what leads to dynamic attraction. People who have sanitized all of those energies out of themselves, they might be good buddies and good partners, but there’s no way that they’re having good sex — or any sex at all.”

How the Fifty Shades Phenomenon Reveals What Couples Really Want

According to Kim Anami, the reason Fifty Shades of Grey and its follow-up books became international bestsellers that spawned hugely popular film adaptations is obvious. “On a primal level,” she posits, “women want their men stronger than them. They want a man who can be the protector, who can stand his ground, who exudes power and confidence, is dominant and can take the lead.” Conversely, in the archetypal male/female relationship, men desire women who are capable of going with the flow, opening themselves fully, and accepting true surrender.

Anami believes the massive number of women for whom the book tapped into a reservoir of longing, in which they found an erotic message that truly resonated with them, speaks for itself. She notes that untold scores of women who got off to Fifty Shades were subsequently begging their male partners to forcefully take charge of the sexual dynamic in their relationships. “[That] tells you exactly what’s been missing between couples for decades,” Anami affirms.

BDSM Role-Play: Rediscovering the Male/Female Pleasure Dynamic

BDSM offers a return to the primal energies that we, as animals, naturally inhabit. And that can be a huge turn-on. “BDSM gives us a chance to explore and play with these themes, to experiment, try them on, and bring dormant parts of us to the surface,” Anami explains.

Citing the growing acceptance of shadow work, a seminal modality based on the precepts originated by Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung, Anami asserts that by inviting our “shadow selves” out to play, we can shed light on parts of our sexual personalities that are no less real or meaningful for having been hidden.

“Wholeness is not achieved by cutting off a portion of one’s being, but by integration of the contraries,” is a quote widely attributed to Jung. While fear might prevent us from exploring our darker fantasies and bringing our secret desires to the fore, liberating the suppressed elements of our psyches enables us to integrate them into a holistic truth and embrace the hidden gifts they bestow.

One of the ways couples can shed light on their inner desires is through BDSM role-play. Anami advises engaging in these mental sexercises with gusto. While role-play might seem challenging at first, Anami says the longer couples engage in the practice, the more reality-changing it can be in real life. Whatever part you assume, play it to the hilt. “Dive into being über-dominant or über-submissive, and let all of the things [you] dare not do in real, polite society, emerge.”

The best approach to take is to be playful, stay in the moment, and let it happen. “This is your arena and opportunity to let things and parts of you out that you generally keep caged up,” says Anami. “Be outrageous. Have fun with it. Let yourself go wild.”
