A Few Days After Surgery

The first few days after shoulder surgery are often the most painful. You’ll likely be on pain medication and have your arm in a sling to keep it immobile. Ice will also be your best friend during this time, as it can help reduce pain and swelling.

The First Few Weeks

After a few days, the pain should start to subside and you’ll begin to feel more comfortable. You’ll still be wearing a sling, but you may be able to start doing some gentle range-of-motion exercises.

At this point, you’ll also start physical therapy, which will help you regain strength and mobility in your shoulder.

The First Few Months

After a few weeks, you’ll gradually start to feel better and have more energy. The pain will continue to improve and you’ll be able to do more with your shoulder.

At this point, you’ll likely be able to ditch the sling and start doing more strenuous exercises. You may even be able to start swimming or biking if your doctor gives you the okay.

The Six-Month Mark

By six months, most people are feeling back to their old selves. The pain is gone and they have full range of motion and strength in their shoulder.

  • start physical therapy
  • avoid strenuous activity
  • follow your doctor’s instructions
