Contouring has been all the rage in beauty since Kim Kardashian made it popular in the mid-2010s. Contour is an excellent way to add depth and shape to the face while magnifying certain features and reducing the appearance of others. Contouring is essentially magic for your face that can draw out even the smallest cheekbones and leave you looking like a supermodel. Do you have an uneven nose or small lips? Contouring can help that, too!

The best part about contouring is that you don’t have to be Kim K’s makeup artist to achieve a contoured look. Follow these three simple steps and you will be contouring like a pro in no time.

Step One: Invest in a Contour Brush Set

Brushes are a key part of achieving a perfectly blended, natural-looking contour. We recommend the Buff Brush for a precise, effortless application. For a perfectly even blend, stick with sculpted brushes that will define the curves of your face and help you achieve the perfect sculpt.

Step Two: Find the Perfect Shade and Apply

You have to find the contour shade that works best with your skin so that the contour lines aren’t visible. Aim for a shade that’s about two shades darker than your natural skin color. We love to use cream foundation to contour because it acts as a second, creamy skin and has a silky application that lasts long and allows for flexible wear. Apply the contour cream or powder onto the areas you want to define: the cheekbones, nose, jawlines, lower lip, along the hairline, and so on.

  • *Bonus tip: Don’t forget to highlight! Pick a highlighter color that’s about two shades lighter than your natural skin color. Lightly apply the highlighter to any areas you want the light to reflect off — under the eyes, the bottom of the nose, and the apples of the cheekbones, for example. Limit your use of highlighter to just those areas you want to draw attention to. If you apply too much highlighter with no rhyme or reason, you will risk looking greasy and un-sculpted — the exact opposite of what you’re going for! Highlighting is the perfect finishing touch that will leave you with dewy, glowing skin that looks straight off the runway.

Step Three: Blend like a Pro

Proper blending is extremely important to achieve a blended and professional-looking contour. First, you should blend with your brush and then dab up any uneven areas with a damp makeup sponge. Achieving the perfect contour blend is much easier said than done, so follow these steps to reach the perfect blend:

  • Tap in small circular motions with the rounded end of a beauty blender.
  • Blend the contour color into your hairline.
  • Don’t forget to spray your finished look with setting spray so your contour lasts all day — and night!

Ta-da! You now have all of the steps to achieve a natural-looking, radiant contour. For more tips and tricks, don’t forget to check out our Seint makeup tutorial.
