When people ask you to come to their business premises for business meetings, you can be sure that they will try to change the environment so that they can intimidate you can get the best contract that is in their best interests.

3. You get valuable face time – Trying to have a meeting using social media or other platform can be a complete nightmare because you don’t get to meet your clients face-to-face. Why Home Improvements Skyrocketed During the Pandemic

New research from the Harvard Joint Center for Housing suggests that the economy shrank in 2020. But despite this, demand for home improvements surged. While the data indicate the output contracted by more than 3.5 percent last year, spending on home repairs actually grew by 3 percent, beating expectations. The growth marked the tenth consecutive year of expansion for the industry. The last time the sector was in contraction was during the financial crisis that spanned 2007-2010.

But why has spending on home improvements gone up so much during the pandemic, despite the strain on people’s incomes? Let’s take a look.

The Return Of The DIY Mentality

While the economy was good from 2011 to 2019, people relied on professional contractors to carry out work on their properties. However, thanks to financial concerns in the aftermath of the pandemic, there was a switch to more do-it-yourself (DIY) work. Many employees were at home more and so took the opportunity to use their spare time productively. Instead of paying a professional to come over and fix up a room for them, they did it themselves.

DIY projects, therefore, are enjoying renewed popularity, especially in lower-income metro areas. According to a homeowner survey reported in the LBM Journal, more than 60 percent of people had begun some sort of home maintenance or renovation project in the first two or three weeks of lockdown. And by May, around two months into the pandemic in the US, the number was more than 80 percent.

Increasing Frequency Of Natural Disasters

Researchers also believe that climate change might be impacting the amount Americans are spending on home repairs. The increasing frequency of disasters, they say, is leading to more home damage necessitating repairs.

For instance, disaster repairs reached an estimated 10 percent of total home improvement expenditures in 2020; a massive $26 billion. A lot of this spending, according to researchers, was due to tornadoes and hurricanes in the southeast of the country, like Florida, its important to have an Ocala Roofing Company on speed dial. For instance, more than 41 percent of all home repair spending was in the Houston area following hurricanes that hit the region in 2019 and 2020.

Pent-Up Demand

Furthermore, spending on many other goods and services went into freefall during the pandemic. People spent less on transport because there was nowhere to go. And they spent less on overseas travel too, thanks to the shutdown of international flights and holiday destinations.

With these major items off the menu, money in people’s accounts soon began piling. And, before long, many homeowners got the itch to spend. Their houses became the obvious choice.

In the immediate aftermath of the arrival of the pandemic, many homeowners put off working on their properties. But as it became clear that the coronavirus was here to stay, many began DIY renovation projects, such as installing modern cabinets, alongside remote work. Combined with the upturn in multi-generational households, the demand for renovations and home improvements has never been higher.

That home improvement demand should go up during the pandemic seems counterintuitive. But the driving factors make sense once you understand the underlying economics of the situation.

Is Solar Actually Environmentally Friendly?

There’s been somewhat of an increase in popularity when it comes to solar power, with many properties both residential and commercial opting to utilize this renewable energy source through local companies offering a solar panel installation service. But how environmentally-friendly is it? In this article, we’ll be looking at whether or not solar power provides benefits to the environment or whether it’s damaging it.

The Manufacturing Of Solar Panels

Before diving into whether or not they’re beneficial for the environment when in use, it’s good to assess the manufacturing of solar panels and how much that impact that may have. Solar panels begin with a common material called quartz and this can be something that’s found in your home, usually on things like your kitchen worktops. Due to the dangers the quartz creates for miners who mine for the material, they’re finding themselves moving towards quartz-rich sands instead.

The manufacturing of the quartz into polysilicon is one that scientists have managed to create through recycling silicon tetrachloride back to the polysilicon in order to reuse it for the production of more solar panels. So with that being said, the manufacturing process itself is pretty sustainable.

What carbon footprint is created with solar panels?

As electricity is produced from solar energy, there’s no emissions of greenhouse gases, fossil fuels, etc. However, there is energy required to make the solar panels but the energy that they produce ends up exceeding what’s used to manufacture them in the first place. So it’s using up a little electrical energy in order to reproduce a lot more sustainable and renewable energy.

And with new technologies, there’s a lot more focus being put on the creation of solar panels to extend their lifetime in order to get the most out of it.

Does maintenance of solar panels impact the environment?

Keeping them clean is likely the only maintenance needed and so the only thing in this case to assess is the amount of water that’s used. In this case it’s around 20 gallons of water per megawatt-hour of electricity. This is less than the typical amount of water that a family would use in a year.

With solar panel cleaning, it’s not something that needs to be done very often either.

The impact on wildlife

One of the biggest concerns when it comes to our environment is creating a world in which it is healthy for other animals to thrive and survive. The solar industry is often looking at ways to improve the impact it can have on animal and plant life when it comes to the solar farms that are created.

As such, there are pre-clearing surveys done to guarantee the safety of local wildlife before the process of the solar projects would even begin. This is certainly more done than can be said for other fuel and energy types.

The reality of solar panels is that this is the cleanest energy source that we have available and it’s something that could certainly help save our planet from getting worse. It’s worth it for more individuals and businesses to make the leap over to solar energy where possible.

5 Ways to Meet New People in College

0

Going to college is an exciting once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll never forget. In years to come, you’ll look back at your time in school with fond memories.

In view of this, higher education is an experience best shared. But how do you meet new people if you’re the type of person who struggles to make friends? Check out this advice:

Be Authentic

When it comes to making friends in college, being yourself is essential. You want to allow your personality to shine through, instead of pretending to be somebody you’re not, just to fit in with the rest of the crowd.

When you think about it, it doesn’t make sense to not be yourself. If people can’t accept you for who you are, you’re better off finding a different bunch to spend your time with.

Eat With People

If you want to get the conversation flowing, then try sitting down for a meal with your dorm room buddies. For decades, students have bonded with each other over food. It’s a great way to get people chatting, and something that everyone will massively appreciate.

Move Into New Accommodation

If you’re still struggling to meet people you like, you could try moving into new accommodation. There are always groups of students looking for extra roommates for their Court street rentals at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.

When you move into a new property, make sure that you’re nice overall. Don’t try to be a people-pleaser or endlessly flatter them. Instead, just take a positive attitude towards them, build them up, and take care of them. That way, you’ll earn their love and respect, and they’ll want to spend more time with you.

Get Involved In Extracurricular Activities

When it comes to extracurricular activities, there’s nowhere better than a college campus. Most universities have facilities for practically every sport and hobby you can imagine.

When choosing extracurricular options, make sure that you select things that you can do as a group. Fishing can be a lot of fun, but it is also a solitary activity. Go with the classics, like football or dancing. Make sure that you become an integral part of the team, going to all the socials outside of practice as well. This way, you can make friendships that last for life.

Look For Common Ground

Campuses can be challenging places to live, thanks to all of the ideologies and political opinions floating around. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make friends. It’s just a matter of finding common ground.

Most people are actually very reasonable at a basic level. The ideas they have often come from their underlying assumptions about life. Just because they have a different opinion doesn’t mean you need to shun them. Try to get to know them on a deeper level if you can. Any political differences should dissolve.

Making friends at college isn’t always easy. But with these tips and tricks, you can massively increase opportunities for meeting new people. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start making friends!

5 Toxic Foods You Shouldn’t Be Feeding Your Dog

0

Dogs are indeed almost everyone’s part of the family, and that is why most of us tend to feed our dogs with the same food we eat. But did you know that not all the food that we feed them is good for them? And some of these are actually toxic?

If we do love our dogs, you should be reading this article because you might be feeding your dog wrongly and, worse, cause them to have health issues.

First of all, you have to know that the bodily systems of humans and our dogs operate differently. This means that what you can ingest may not be ingestible for your dogs. Here are the foods that you shouldn’t be feeding your dogs.

1. Chocolate and food rich in caffeine

Chocolates contain Theobromine, which could be toxic to your dogs. When these are taken at excessive levels, your dog may experience diarrhea, which clearly upsets its tummy. An example of this is dark chocolate. This will contain both Theobromine and caffeine, which will obviously double the detrimental effects to your dog.

2. Grapes, Raisins, Onions, and Garlic

Grapes and raisins may not be harmful to some dogs, but this type of food has been cited as one of the causes of kidney failure among dogs. Within 12 hours of ingestion, some dogs experience vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhea, which will trigger dehydration.

As well as the onions and garlic, these have compounds that trigger gastroenteritis and anemia. They pose serious damage to your dog’s red blood cells. And for obvious reasons, these things don’t sound good for your dog’s health.

 3. Alcohol

Alcohol contains ethanol, while beer contains hops, both of which could be poisonous to your pets. These trigger alcohol intoxication which eventually causes vomiting, the rising temperature of the body, and disorientations – things you would never want your beloved dogs to experience.

4. Food that contains Xylitol

Amongst all food, those that contain this substance are fatal to your dog. Candies and gums are among the common examples of this. This substance causes blood sugar drop, and when this becomes severe, it can cause death in the worst-case scenario.

5. Fat-Rich Foods.

These types of foods, specifically fatty foods such as beef, pork, and other processed fatty foods, are strictly prohibited to our dogs because this can cause diseases that can complicate the organs. The effect on humans is the same for dogs.

For the processed foods, one example is salami. It is a favorite among dogs because of its aroma that attracts them to eat it. Unfortunately, feeding your dogs salami is not advisable since it would cause salt poisoning that will trigger kidney issues and pancreatitis. The harmful effects of this processed food will eventually damage your dog’s stomach.

Taking care of a dog involves being learned and sensitive enough to what they eat. As said earlier, the food you feed your dog may be harmful to him, so make sure to exercise caution when feeding him human food.

How To Start A Non-Profit Organization

0

Most people wanting to start a non-profit organization have intentions to give back to the community and render help to certain people who need it. If you are unsure of how to begin, then you are in the right place.

We believe that before you delve into a venture, you need to understand everything that is involved. We will show you the step-by-step process of how you can get your non-profit organization up and running. You may not need to take all the steps written down in this article because we will be stating generally all the requirements. It will depend on what applies to your state.  We advise that you check in with a legal practitioner or your state’s official site for businesses and corporations, to know the standard requirements.

Here are the steps involved in setting up a non-profit organization:

Do Your Research

Before you set out to start your non-profit organization, you need to find out if other organizations are doing exactly what you intend to do for your community. If you are repeating the same ideas, it would be difficult for you to get support because instead of coming up with a fresh idea, you will be doing exactly what is on the ground. Also, you need to know the population of the people who would be needed the help your non-profit intends to give. For this reason, the demographic or population data will help you get the answer to your question.

Why Start A Non-profit Organisation?

The law specifically states the requirements for non-profit organizations. You will be setting it up solely to help others and not with any intention to make a profit. If you set up a non-profit because you want to make an income, that is against the rules of a non-profit. It should solely be for charitable purposes. You also need to decide if it is the right choice for you by learning about the advantages and disadvantages of establishing a non-profit organization.

Know Your Options

You need to understand what you are getting into. One of the biggest issues most non-profits experience when starting is how to raise money, especially from reliable sources. It has been estimated that less than half of newly formed non-profit organizations survive the first five years of operation. Even for those that scale through the five years, a third of them still struggle with finances.

You can find a way to balance things if you want the non-profit to survive. You will need to consider options that allow you still operate as a non-profit but cost much less to sustain.

Build a Solid Foundation

The next step to take will be forming your mission statement. Your non-profit mission statement should embrace everything your organization stands for. Every decision or step you take must be in line with your mission statement.

Write Your Business Plan

You must draw up a business plan for your non-profit. Every corporate setup requires a business plan, however, your business plan should simply be following your mission statement. It should strictly follow the rules of non-profit organizations and should in no way contain any prospect of making financial gains.

Set Up Your Board

Your governing board will be there to help in running the activities of the non-profit. You will need to do some recruitment, training, and evaluation so they understand their roles or responsibilities.

Incorporate Your Non-profit

After you have carried out the above steps, you will need to officially set up your non-profit. Just like corporations, you are required to file your incorporation documents for a non-profit organization with your state. This gives your business legal standing.

Understanding Cloud Security: The Basics Explained

0

Name one technology tool more influential in the last year than the cloud. Not an easy task, huh? Even the most prominent utilities (like video conferencing) rely on the cloud and cloud security.

As more and more people around the world transition to remote work, the cloud’s prominence only continues to grow.

Yet this increased reliance on the cloud also comes with an increased need for security. As technology becomes more sophisticated, so do cyberattacks. But what is security in the cloud and how does it work? Here we explain the basics so you can implement them effectively in your own organization.

What is cloud security?

It is essentially a blend of technology, policies, and processes that aim to protect the data you store in the cloud. From filtering traffic to authenticating access to the cloud or documents within it, cloud security can be precisely configured to the exact needs of your company.

As of May 2020, the top security concerns regarding the cloud were data loss and leakage. In fact, 7 out of 10 participants reported worrying about security. Two-thirds of respondents reported concern about data privacy and confidentiality—both factors of security.

How does cloud security work?

Cloud security services provide certain features that can ensure your data and cloud is protected. This includes but is not limited to the following:

A secure server

Security programs analyze traffic before it reaches your server and only allow legitimate users to pass your security protocols.

Data management

Data is the name of the game. Cloud services use powerful encryption methods and complex algorithms to protect and conceal your data. Other companies besides cloud providers—like this software company in Austin—also offer this perk, so be sure to shop around before committing to one provider.

A backup and recovery plan

Cloud data is most secure when it is backed up on redundant storage methods. Always keep your data in more than one place so you’re less likely to suffer from data loss.

Threat prevention

The cloud uses Intrusion Prevention Systems, Intrusion Detection Systems and Threat Intelligence to identify attackers who might either be attacking you or who could in the future. This means you can be alerted ahead of time and prevent anything from happening.

IT compliance for cloud security

Cloud-based security services run off a set of compliance rules and regulations to ensure your data is secure. These are bound by law and ensure your cloud system is fully protected, and as such, will follow any industry standards your business requires.

4 Reasons You Shouldn’t Manage IT On Your Own

0

In the last few decades, and many businesses have seen IT morph from an option to a core component in their industries. No matter what sector you work in, you likely rely on your IT department—or someone else’s—for a variety of computer needs. If your managed IT is strong, your business is stronger, too.

That’s why it’s so vital that you ensure your IT infrastructure is up to date. It has to be able to hold the weight of your company on its shoulders.

Of course, updating and maintaining IT is a full-time job, and as a business owner, you probably don’t have time to manage both a company and its technology. That’s where a managed IT provider comes in.

Managed IT providers are experts in everything IT. When you outsource your technology problems to them, you skip the work of assembling your own in-house IT department. Read on to discover four of the main reasons you should invest in a managed IT provider rather than your own department.

Managed IT Saves You Money

You may think that an in-house team of IT employees will save you money, but in the long run, the opposite is true.

Think of the individual costs:

  • Staff (wages, benefits, training, etc.)
  • Software
  • Hardware
  • Security installations and maintenance
  • Data storage
  • Remote access
  • Cloud computing

Each of these items is expensive at the get-go, but they get even pricier the longer you stay in business. After all, IT refers to both the deployment and maintenance of technology. As your company grows, so do your IT department’s to-do list—and the costs associated with it.

A managed IT provider, on the other hand, only charges one monthly fee, saving you the headache of budgeting for all your IT expenses. You’ll find that they’ll often get you better deals on software and hardware, and they’ll do all the labor, too.

Managed IT Offers Greater Security

One of the most important elements of any business’s work is data. You’ll need to collect plenty of data to run your business successfully, and whether it’s customer payment details, orders, personal preferences, or anything else, this data can help you to form a marketing campaign, help you to sell to the right people, and to ensure that you’re making a profit.

However, as much as this data is essential to you, it’s also essential to cybercriminals, and they will undoubtedly try to hack into your systems to find this sensitive information.

To prevent this from happening, an in-house IT department would need to be running 24/7, constantly monitoring the situation. Since this is not possible, your best bet is a managed IT company that will monitor your systems on your behalf and offer data security services

You’ll also avoid the risk of employees destroying data (either by accident or on purpose), ensuring you can keep your business running no matter what threats there might be.

Managed IT Means You’ll Be Up To Date

Technology is constantly advancing. By the time you’ve set up your IT department with the most up-to-date technology, something else will be in place to supersede it.

Yet if you don’t update your systems, cybercriminals are more likely to find a way in, plus your business will be lagging behind in terms of the work it can do and how it can help its customers.

Staying up to date with technology is a full-time task. It’s not something that you can take on when you have other business areas to work in. Plus, if you’re not an IT expert, spotting the newest trends and implementing them correctly is almost impossible.

This is yet another reason why you shouldn’t manage IT on your own. When you have outsourced your needs to a managed IT company, you can leave this work to them. They will know what new tech your business can benefit from and ensure that it is used.

Managed IT Means No Confusion

Running a business is not an easy task; there is always something to do, always something to learn, always decisions to be made. If you add IT to that mix of confusion, it can be even more challenging to be a business owner. This is especially true since you will carry out so much of your business online. So of course, outsourcing to a managed IT expert is ideal.

Plus, we mustn’t forget compliance. IT compliance is a massively complex area, and it’s not something that can be learned and understood overnight. However, when you have a managed IT company to help you, you can rest assured that your business will be compliant and ready for any audit to occur.

Investing in Toronto Real Estate: Is It Worth It?

0

When purchasing real estate properties, there are too many considerations one should take and look closely. First to that is the location. For obvious reasons, location is such a huge factor when buying properties.

In this article, the focus would be on purchasing real estate in Toronto, Canada

Toronto is a “melting pot” of people and culture.

Having said that, people across the countries and almost from all walks of life are situated in Toronto. An estimated 100,000 people go to this place and this only means that the housing needs of these Toronto goers are high. This, for you, is an advantage. Because of the fact that a huge number of people come here, several entities are there to accommodate the housing needs of people. There are note-worthy groups of professionals that would aid you in decision-making.

Toronto has a strong market appreciation.

The value of land always increases because in any part of the world, it becomes scarce as years go by. And that applies to Toronto, most especially because more and more developments are built every year. The growing population and the slow decline of the number of lands make the value of any real estate increased.

Still, with more amenities, homes, and establishments popping up, the city becomes more and more desirable as well. So even if the real estate prices in Toronto are steeper than others, there’s a lot you can get and the value will appreciate over time.

Toronto houses century-old homes that when renovated become an advantage.

These old properties are often sold at low prices and all you have to do is perform some make-over to increase their value. To sum it all up, an investor would make a wise decision if he/she invests in real estate properties in progressive places like Toronto. When a place has lots of opportunities, it will always bring about good things to you as an investor.

Final Words

However, you should also consider that the steady pace of income from rents in Toronto will always come at a high price and this leaves people to only afford to rent. From the investor’s point of view, this is an advantage in a way because it gives the investor a “stable” source of income. After all, rental income is a pretty steady stream of profit. That is why when investing in this location, choose to start with a high-quality unit that is worth its price.

There are plenty of reasons why you should start investing in real states especially when you buy at the right time where interests are low in the market cycle. Specifically, condo units, since urbanization are increasing which makes it on demand, and condos offer a range of amenities like gym, pool, and spa which is included in your condo fees. So, you’re not responsible for its maintenance and you’re basically buying it as new so there’s no need for repairs. You could just move in and start living the city life. Plus, this location and its market condition are very good and practical for entry-level investments as you could also take advantage of demographic changes.

Must-Have Tools For Woodworking Business

0

When woodworking is your thing or perhaps one of your favorite weekend or daily hobbies, you can actually turn it into a business opportunity where you can earn a lot. But while your skill level matters, the key to effectively create woodworking projects is the selection of tools you have in your workshop.

There are lots of tools that you could browse at your nearest local hardware or even online, but the truth of the matter is, not all tools are really necessary. All you have to do is select the basic ones. In this article, we will outline the basic woodworking tools that you need as a beginner. Here are some of the tools you need:

Circular saw with dust collector

The first thing you need to have when woodworking is a good range of saws. Of course, you need to cut chunks of wood to make a project. Circular saws are necessary to have in your arsenal. In this case, we recommend picking circular saws with dust collection because, at the end of the day, this will save you time and effort cleaning up all the mess.

Hammer

As part of the assembly tools, every woodworker must have a good hammer. There are various hammer types and each one can be used to pound and merge things into one to create an output. Hammers are also used to detach nails when they are fastened to pieces of wood.

Power Drill

One of the essential things you’d be doing when woodworking is to create holes that will serve to enable the “assembling” of parts made of wood. Power drills do this job and it makes the person experience less hassle when connecting parts.

Screw Gun

Putting screws on wood parts is tough especially if this is done manually. A screw gun lessens the toughness because although it would still require some handwork since it has a mechanism that permits the fastening of screws neatly, wood parts become attached with less hassle. Plus, it is being placed with precision.

Tape Measures

For a woodworking business, it’s important to measure wood as accurately as possible for those custom projects. A tape measure enables you to get the right size of wood depending on your desired project. Plus, it also serves as a gauge in measuring the probable length, width and height of wood necessary for the project.

Final Words

Eventually, as you expand your woodworking business, you would need to use more sophisticated tools to improve your output and to enhance your skills as well.

However, you are always better off starting with the basics so as to learn effectively and gradually. This is a golden principle when learning how to acquire skills like woodworking.

Lastly, patience is key. In woodworking, you may get easily frustrated but remember, there’s plenty of time to practice using the tools. You need to also develop a sense of resourcefulness when using these tools because their functionality is vast. In the end, with the right amount of creativity, you’d be able to create great projects from basic ones to advanced.
